In the 1990s, they made those wacky God of Gamblers movies. Now in 2009, Hong Kong film studio China Star is returning to the dealer table for a new joint project called Poker King, set in the gaming world of Macau. The project has already started shooting in and around Macau. To give it a bit more authenticity than, say, those goofy movies of Chow Yun-fat and Chow Sing-chi being card sharks, directors Chan Hing-Kai and Janet Chun will be at the Asian Poker Tour Festival, starting today, to shoot some stock and behind-the-scenes footage. The 12-day tournament at Macau's Galaxy StarWorld Hotel is set to feature some of the biggest names in the poker world. The movie though will star Sean Lau Ching-wan, Louis Koo Tin-lok, Stephy Tang Lai-yan and Josie Ho Chiu-yee. It also happens to be co-produced by an actual casino operator, the Suncity Group. By the way, the tournament is likely to get more coverage next week when it hosts a celebrity poker tournament on Tuesday. The thing is, the only non-poker celebrities involved seem to be former beauty queens (Erica Yuen Lei-ming and Natalie Ng man-yan) and those now ubiquitous pseudo-models (Kama Lo Hoi-shan, Chrissie Chau Sau-na and Lavina Chung). Perhaps it's strip poker they're playing.
