A drunk and unlicensed driver who killed two people when he ploughed into a night market in Heilongjiang last week has been charged with endangering public safety. The man injured 24 people in the city of Jixi. The city's deputy police chief said the suspect, Zhang Xijun, had driven a jeep into the market while people were eating dinner. He said hitting people with a vehicle was regarded as endangering lives, property and safety, and Zhang could face between three and 10 years behind bars. The Heilongjiang Morning News said Zhang had run over a child's foot and then reversed, killing an old woman and hitting other pedestrians before smashing into a barbecue restaurant. Police said Zhang, who worked at a mining machinery company, had been out drinking with friends before the incident. His driver's licence was suspended in 2004.
