Legco date for minister over social worker's allegations

Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing said he would attend a Legislative Council meeting next month over allegations that he had pressured the Young Women's Christian Association to move a social worker critical of the way the government handled flooding in Tai O last summer. In a reply to lawmaker Audrey Eu Yuet-mee, Mr Tsang denied he had ever asked the association to move Eddie Tse Sai-kit from its Tai O office. Mr Tse later quit and complained to the Legco complaints division that Mr Tsang had put pressure on the group.

Democrats seek HK$10b fund

The Democratic Party has called on the government to set up a HK$10 billion family emergency fund, after a party survey of 435 people found more than half hoped the administration would offer loans to temporarily unemployed people to tide them over during the financial crisis. The study also found one fifth of respondents believed their employers were likely to cut their pay in the next six months.

Transport chief's pledge

New Commissioner for Transport Joseph Lai Yee-tak pledged to improve transport infrastructure to meet demand. Starting his new job yesterday, he said he would work closely with colleagues in managing traffic, regulating public transport services, promoting road safety as well as planning to cope with growth in demand for transport facilities.
