Tale about aliens falls flat

Alvin Yuen

In the deluxe DVD edition of Walt Disney's Race to Witch Mountain, Dwayne Johnson stars as Jack Bruno, a taxi driver in Las Vegas. He unwittingly protects two siblings from outer space who are battling to save our planet from an alien invasion.

The travellers are humanoids who crash landed on earth.

While Bruno helps the teenagers, Sara and Seth, the viewers learn of his criminal record. He may have broken the law, but he is a good-hearted person.

Sara and Seth explain that they travelled to earth to collect scientific data of an experiment and need to return to their planet.

The aliens have special powers, including the ability to read minds and move objects. They can also 'change their molecular consistency' to walk through walls.

But there are many holes in the plot, which makes the movie a disappointing experience.

For example, the aliens stop bullets and other projectiles fired at them. However, they cannot do anything about tranquiliser darts.

Also, they survive a head-on car crash but are unable to use their abilities to evade capture.

In addition, the acting is mediocre at best, although viewers aged below 12 may find the movie somewhat entertaining.

The deluxe edition has no worthy extras which make it a double disappointment.
