a. The former South Korean president passed away last week. In his five-year term between 1998 and 2003, he pushed through vigorous economic reforms. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000. He also held a historic summit meeting in Pyongyang that year with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.

b. The Hong Kong businessman is planning to renew his bid to buy English Premier League football club Birmingham City. His initial efforts two years ago failed over concerns about the funding of the deal. He ended up with a 29.9 per cent stake, which he is now holding.

c. She won the 800-metre final at the world championships in Berlin last week, but the teenage athlete was involved in a row over her gender. Her stunning performance came just after the International Association of Athletics Federations announced the boyish-looking runner would have to undergo a gender test.

d. The Muslim model has agreed to return home to Malaysia, where she will receive six strokes of the cane for drinking beer. The mother of two, who lives in Singapore, will become the first woman in the country to be caned under Islamic law. She was last month sentenced by a Malaysian court, which also issued an arrest warrant for her. The caning has been put off till next month.

e. He is a leading legal activist on the mainland and a co-founder of a legal aid group which handled many sensitive cases. He was arrested for failing to pay taxes and was released on bail this week in what supporters saw as a rare event for human rights campaigners.
