A minibus driver trying to manoeuvre out of a traffic jam backed his vehicle over a 94-year-old man, then drove forward over him again.
Kwan Bun died under the wheels of the bus driven by Chan Kai-hung, 59, who pleaded guilty yesterday to dangerous driving causing death.
The District Court heard that Chan had reversed without properly checking traffic conditions behind his vehicle, relying instead on a passenger who agreed to direct him.
Prosecutor Stewart Hau said Chan, with three passengers, had been driving northwest in Tung Tai Street, Yuen Long, on the afternoon of January 11. On reaching Tai Lee Street, he encountered a traffic jam and immediately reversed to take a short cut, knocking Kwan down with the rear offside corner of his vehicle.
He felt something had been knocked down when he had reversed about half the length of the vehicle, and stopped, then drove forward, feeling the wheels roll over the object again. He stopped and got out.
Under police caution, Chan said one of the passengers, a Mr Wong, had volunteered to check the traffic behind and said there were no vehicles. Chan had watched only the central rear-view mirror as he reversed.
