Smart spenders have fun

A hundred dollars can certainly buy you a decent meal but it could be a mission impossible to spend less than that on a day trip in Hong Kong. Young Post reporters Zoe Mak and Sunny Tse bravely took on the unimaginable challenge to show you how to have fun with a HK$100 note.

Believe it or not: we had a blast and also money to spare! The journey started with breakfast on Gough Street with a honey and lemon crispy bun and a walk around Wellington Street area. It's a great place to experience the old Hong Kong - the wet markets, oyster sauce shops, dried seafood stores and antique shops.

In between Lyndhurst Terrace and Wellington Street corner, there is a secret garden just beneath the escalator with numerous stray cats hanging out behind the barb wires. This Kitties Paradise is perhaps the best place in town for photo shoots of cats.

Lunch consisted of budget local gourmet - noodles in wonton soup on Wellington Street. Then we walked along Duddell Street and took the staircase to the Hong Kong Botanical and Zoological Garden. We checked out exotic animals like the alligator, python, lemur and porcupines. Time simply flies as you watch these adorable creatures sleep in the bright sunshine.

The tram is undeniably the best friend of the budget traveller. We headed down to Wan Chai Tai Yuen Street, or 'Toy Street', by tram. The toys, costumes and street treats like tasty egg puff - a waffle-like snack - will definitely stir up your inner five-year-old.

After spending half a day on Hong Kong Island, it was time to explore the Kowloon peninsula. The journey continued with a ferry ride across the harbour and a bus ride to Sham Shui Po.
