A teenager in the District Court yesterday admitted having sex with a 12-year-old girl, who later gave birth to a boy. 
Ku Tsz-hong, who is now 16, pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13, which occurred in September last year. 
Their relationship came to light in March when the girl, who is now 13, sought help with her pregnancy from the local charity Mother's Choice.  
Prosecutor Dominic Ngai  Chun-pong  told the court that Ku got to know the girl on the internet last year, and that she told him she was  14. 
Ngai said the pair chatted online and over the phone for a month, before they arranged to meet on September 14. They first agreed to meet in an internet cafe, but Ku later suggested they meet at his home in Kowloon City. When the girl arrived at his flat, Ku took her to the rooftop and suggested they have sex there. 
The girl, who had no sexual experience, resisted his advances at first. But she later relented and had sex with him, without using a condom, for 30 minutes.   
When the girl discovered she was pregnant, she was unable to contact Ku either on his mobile phone or the internet chat room, Ngai said. 
She sought counselling from Mother's Choice on March 1 this year, and the case was reported to the police the following day. On May 26, the girl gave birth to a baby boy who is now under the care of the Mother's Choice Child Care Home. 
Deputy Judge  Johnny Chan Jong-herng  adjourned sentencing to September 14 pending reports. 
According to Suvan Law Sui-wan,  pregnant girls' services team leader at Mother's Choice, the youngest mother to seek help from their group was 12 years old - an incident that dated back to before 2006. 
Between 2006 and this year, the youngest unmarried mothers who sought help from them were 13.  Under-age pregnancies made up 31 per cent of the 237 cases the group handled from last year  to March this year.  
Law said young people who fell into sexual relations met each other most commonly through friends, but the internet was among the top three ways of meeting. 
Social worker and former lawmaker Dr Fernando Cheung Chiu-hung  said it would be impossible to prohibit teenagers from using computers in this era of technology. 
However, parents should pay more attention to what their children did on the internet, and should provide guidance if they suspected their children were being drawn towards deviant behaviour.
