A fmaily in disgrace

Chris Taylor

Who?

Wu Shu-chen, Chen Chih-chung, Chen Hsin-yu and Chao Chien-ming, respectively the wife, son, daughter and son-in-law of former Taiwan president Chen Shui-bian, were jailed on Tuesday.

What?

Chen Shui-bian is in jail on charges of embezzling money from a special government fund. He faces a possible life sentence.

His family members were imprisoned for perjury - giving false statements, or testimony, to a court - about the embezzlement case. Wu was sentenced to two years, while the younger members each received one-year terms. All sentences were reduced. They are widely expected to appeal the decision.

When?

Chen, Taiwan's former Democratic Progressive Party president, has been in jail since December and will learn the result of his own trial on September 11.

Where?

The decision to hand out jail sentences to the Chen family was made in the Taipei District Court.

Why?

Chen Shui-bian is charged with embezzling NT$104 million (HK$27.5 million), and his family has now been charged with helping him cover it up. The court has jailed them for lying in their previous statements about the money Chen is charged with having stolen.
