Recent rumours that 60-year-old 'God of Song' Sam Hui Koon-kit had difficulty getting in shape for his upcoming concert series were put to rest when he appeared on a television programme recently and showed off his muscular physique.

'I have been training in karate every day for the past couple of weeks,' Hui said during the show. 'I have lost about 2.5kg. Look at how fit I am now.'

Although he is a recent convert to karate, Hui has long been a fighter in the Canto-pop world, surviving the loss of many friends and staging a comeback after a premature retirement.

Born in Guangdong in 1948, Hui moved to Hong Kong when he was two. His love for music became evident during his teens and at 16 he formed the Harmonicks in 1964.

The band broke up after a year and Hui (above) joined another band, the Lotus, who mostly performed British and American pop songs and enjoyed some brief popularity before also splitting up.

Hui's big break came in the early 1970s when he paired up with elder brother and comedian Michael Hui Koon-man for the popular TV variety programme the Hui Brothers Show and was then offered opportunities to sing theme songs for drama series.
