Aquarium aficionados see something fishy in plan to 'beautify' street: sushi, anyone?
Mong Kok's Tung Choi Street is better known for live goldfish than sushi. This is why connoisseurs of pet fish and aquarium sellers got suspicious when the Urban Renewal Authority announced its plan to beautify their neighbourhood along with four other streets, and released a dodgy artist's impression.
The artistic rendering involves plenty of shop signs for goldfish - and strangely, a giant advertisement for fresh tuna sushi in Japanese (top in picture). Perhaps someone at the authority has come up with the bright idea of 'improving' the street by introducing Japanese cuisine and raw fish, for example, while at the same time people can go shopping for live goldfish.
The authority, never considered trustworthy by residents who have had their homes bulldozed, is perceived as being a stooge of property developers, but now perhaps it's adding restaurateurs to its commercial constituents.
The area needs a revamp to make it more tourist-friendly, the Urban Renewal Authority says. Is that code for a secret plan to change the aquariums into sushi restaurants?
