As people continue to dress down, the sporty chic look has made a comeback. Past seasons have seen more fashion houses collaborating with sportswear brands ranging from Sergio Rossi and Yohji Yamamoto to Alexander McQueen. Among the sporty attire on offer, I find shoes the easiest way to embrace the trend. Just think of the variety of open-toed sneakers, sneaker heels and sporty sandals available. If you want to draw attention to your outfit, a pair of sporty shoes should do the trick. Makeup artist Ahlu (right) loves her black sporty sandals. She says they are ultra comfy thanks to the thick platform and elastic straps. I like how she's matched them with a pink and black silk dress to counterbalance the boyishness and add panache. Little details also make a difference - for example, she's tucked the bottoms of her legging into her sandals. Her black leather Alexander Wang Brenda bag also adds a rocker vibe to her outfit. Wing (far right) has picked a pair of military green sporty heels - open-toe wedges made from canvas and patent leather with cut-out details, a la Stella McCartney's mesh basket sandals or Yves Saint Laurent's cage shoes. Her outfit is grungier and includes an oversized white shirt and cotton harem pants. Her structural silhouette and simple colours create a sleek ensemble that allows attention to be drawn to her interesting shoes. Her accessories include a long silver chain necklace and a black leather hold-all that are also simple and boyish. Both fashionistas are good examples of how to work sporty shoes into our wardrobes. If you don't want to look like you are rushing to a gym, pair sporty items with feminine pieces such as a silk one-piece or loose-cut Bermuda shorts. Wear open-toe or cut-out sandals with your favourite leggings or socks when the weather gets cooler and you'll still be on trend. Visit Converse (Shop S16, LCX, 9 Kingston St, Fashion Walk, Causeway Bay, tel: 2881 5591) for affordable sneaker heels in various colours. Customise them by swapping the laces for colourful ribbons. If you can splurge, I saw a pair of white lace-up sneaker heels by See by Chloe (Lane Crawford, Pacific Place, Admiralty, tel: 2155 8066), a versatile and comfortable choice. Adidas by Stella McCartney (17 Hankow Rd, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2730 0157) has a pair of black ballerina flats with sporty patent-leather straps that are great for a more casual look.
