A serial rapist who attacked two women while burgling their homes was sentenced to life in jail yesterday after the judge said he posed an extreme danger to the public.
Chan Li-fat, 48, told a psychiatrist he raped the women because he did not want to 'waste the opportunity', since he had already committed another crime.
Sentencing Chan in the Court of First Instance, deputy High Court judge Mr Justice Colin Mackintosh said he must serve at least 18 years in jail before he could be considered for release.
The judge said Chan deserved 'nothing less than the most severe punishment' for what he had done.
Chan pleaded guilty on August 11 to two charges of aggravated burglary and two of rape, for breaking into the homes of the women, aged 39 and 28, tying them up and violently raping them. The two incidents took place in March and June last year.
Mackintosh said Chan 'represented the worst nightmare of everyone, especially women', and noted that he had more than 20 convictions for similar offences.
