The annual update from Apple last week yielded the fifth generation iPod Nano, which now comes with a built in video camera - a first for iPods. The new Nano looks pretty much like the last model, but on the bottom right, you get a lens that can capture VGA video at a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels at 30 frames per second. One bit of information that Apple didn't give out is the actual resolution of the camera, but the quality is optimised for YouTube, with the H.264 compression, so it should be good enough for most Web applications. On the other hand, it probably won't look that good on your HD television. With the camera, Apple has also put in 15 real-time effects, such as X-ray, film grain and black & white, so there are lots of ways to get creative with your shoots. The emphasis, however, is on video: according to initial reports, the camera won't take still photos. Another thing missing is wireless. You'll have to sync videos to your PC before you can upload them. As with previous models, you also get a radio, a pedometer for measuring your steps, and an accelerometer for motion gaming. The new model also comes with a slightly bigger, 2.2-inch display, compared to 2-inch for the previous generation. The new Nano 5G is available with 8GB or 16GB of memory. Prices are HK$1,168 and HK$1,388 respectively. Pros: built-in video camera, 15 special effects for video recording, bigger display Cons: only takes video, no still photo, it's not an iPod Touch
