Lee Kuan Yew is a Singaporean legend. He is also very controversial.
I have learned in history that Lee helped to bring an end to British colonial rule in Singapore, which then became part of Malaysia, and then he helped the state become fully independent.
Under Lee's leadership and perseverance, Singapore became a safe, clean and stable country.
But some of Lee's actions angered politicians. Lee's laws said every Singaporean must be obedient and methodical. Chewing gum is outlawed and there are strict rules on matters such as getting married and giving birth.
Even the press is restricted and cannot report any news that reflects badly on the government.
While it cannot be denied that Lee contributed greatly to his country, it's not clear whether he was an ideal leader or whether Singaporeans are really happy.
