Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is strongly committed to meeting the needs of industry and the business community, both locally and internationally.
This is underlined by the creation of its Technology Transfer Centre, which focuses on commercialising research into products and services.
Established in the early days of the university, the centre mirrors licensing offices at many North American universities.
Set up as the university's knowledge transfer agent, its mission is to help effective technology development and transfer for the benefit of society.
'The centre utilises the outstanding research and development infrastructure and resources as well as the international links of HKUST to facilitate the application of advanced technology in industry,' said Dr Claudia Xu, the centre's director. 'It is a bridge between the university and the business sector.' The aims of the centre are to transfer technology and research information to industry and to solicit industrial funding for joint research and development projects.
It also captures, protects and manages intellectual property arising from the university's research works.
The establishment of proactive links with local industry to stimulate innovation and technology development at the university is another key element.
