Alocal property developer has launched a campaign to reduce the use of plastic umbrella bags in its shopping malls and housing estates.
Sino Property Services says the initiative is aimed at tackling wastage and easing the city's garbage problem.
Local green group, Greeners Action, recently conducted a survey on the use of plastic umbrella bags in Hong Kong.
According to the survey results, an average of 18 million plastic umbrella bags are used during the rainy season. Sixty per cent of them are discarded after one-time use.
Kwok Ying-ying of Greeners Action said: 'Compared to other cities, the use of plastic umbrella bags is a serious problem in Hong Kong. This produces a lot of waste.
'We hope shopping malls can encourage visitors to reuse plastic umbrella bags or think of some ways to replace them.'
