10,000 object to proposed MTR route across island's south
More than 10,000 signatures opposing the MTR South Island Line's route had been submitted to the government when a two-month objection period on the link ended on Tuesday.
The grievances will have to be considered before the project can move on to the next stage.
A group of Southern District residents collected 4,000 signatures during a two-day street campaign that called for the entire link to be pushed underground. A further 500 people offered their support on the internet.
A rehabilitation centre for the mentally ill collected 6,558 signatures from the patients and their family members, who hope a viaduct section of the link will be put underground.
While district residents support construction of the link, many are unhappy about a viaduct section above the nullah between Nam Fung Road and Ap Lei Chau.
The train line would damage the area's beautiful scenery and pass several noise-sensitive institutions - a seminary, a temple, a home for the elderly and a hostel for the mentally disabled.
