A driver believed to have been on the run for months on drug charges was being hunted last night after eluding police in a wild 16-kilometre car chase that left two policemen and a woman motorist injured.
Police said they knew who the man was and were holding the car's owner for questioning.
During the chase, the man drove along the Fanling and Tolo highways at well above the 100km/h speed limit, reversed into a police car five times, rammed another car and a minibus at a red light, then crashed his vehicle in Fanling and fled, police said.
'We have identified who was driving the car. Our information shows that he is not the car's owner,' a police officer involved in the investigation said. 'We believe that he ignored warnings and refused to stop because he is a wanted person.'
He said the man, in his 20s, was wanted by police and customs over several drug-related cases. A bag containing seven to eight grams of a substance believed to be the illegal drug Ice was found in the car.
The drama began at 11.15pm on Tuesday when police saw the Mazda being driven erratically on Po Shek Wu Road near the junction with Jockey Club Road in Sheung Shui.
Police ordered the car to stop, but the driver sped off to the Kowloon-bound section of the Fanling Highway as two constables gave chase in a police car.
