Twenty-four-year-old Fontane Lau Ngai-wan has become Hong Kong's first 'climate tracker' and will be joining UN climate summits and tracking the performances of global leaders.
WWF launched the climate tracker competition last month to select a young tracker to join Adopt a Negotiator, an initiative by the Global Call for Climate Action.
Lau's all-round knowledge on climate change won her more than 800 votes online, as well as a thumbs-up by the judging panel. Then she was selected from a shortlist of 10 candidates to become Hong Kong's climate tracker.
'Climate change is an issue that threatens everyone on earth. I would like Hongkongers, especially teenagers, to understand more about emission deal negotiations and other climate change issues to see the full picture,' she said.
Lau, who is pursuing a Master's degree in corporate environmental and sustainability management in Australia, previously worked as an intern with WWF.
'After doing the internship, I felt I should do something to make the business sector change their practices to combat climate change,' she said.
Lau is currently in Bangkok for the UN Climate Meeting, which is running from today until October 9.
