The story of the People's Republic is one that features many amazing numbers. But in a country where a third of the population was illiterate just 45 years ago, perhaps the most amazing are those relating to the education system. In 2007, the most recent year for which figures are available, 14.3 million children began their first year of pre-school and 58,022 people began studying for doctoral degrees. There were 103.2 million students at secondary schools and 107.8 million at primary schools. It is their hopes and dreams that will write the next 60 years of China's history.
