VOLUME of containerised cargo between Japan and Vietnam is growing rapidly, according to a survey by Shipping and Trade News of Tokyo.
According to the survey report, south-bound cargo to Vietnam now reaches about 1,070 TEUs (20 ft equivalent units) a month, up 62.1 per cent from August last year.
According to the survey, shipping companies started assigning their container ships on the Japan-Vietnam trade in earnest in 1989.
They were joined by the big carriers in 1991 and 1992.
About 400 TEUs of monthly cargo traffic was registered in August 1992, rising to 660 TEUs in August last year.
At present, southbound cargo to Vietnam consists mostly of machinery, construction equipment, vehicles, motorcycles, tyres and chemical products.
