The latest 3D animation adaptation of manga legend Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy is of universal appeal. It is rather like a futuristic Pinocchio, featuring a boy who rises from zero to hero. There is plenty of action, too, with robots, explosions and hi-tech gadgets, while telling a story of self-discovery and self-acceptance.

After losing his beloved son in a car accident, genius scientist Dr Tenma (voiced by Nicolas Cage) builds an android based on his son's looks but with superpowers. But the robot, Astro Boy (voiced by Freddie Highmore), who is designed to behave like a normal boy, lacks emotions. Unable to fulfil his father's expectations, Astro Boy goes on a journey in search of acceptance.

During his adventure, he befriends many colourful characters - humans and robots alike - and learns the joy and feelings of being human. But he also experiences betrayal and the cruel, unreliable side of the world. When Astro Boy learns his hometown, Metro City, is under attack, the superhero needs to gather enough courage to intervene, but more so, to face the father who once rejected him.

Fifty-seven years since it first came out in manga form, Astro Boy, or Tetsuwan Atomu, as it is known in Japanese, has captivated millions worldwide. Featuring in anime series, video games, as toys and lunchboxes, the metallic kid is a household name. Now, finally, he is hitting the silver screen in 3D.

These 97 minutes is a team effort by multi-national talents. A Japanese story told Hollywood-style by David Bowers who debuted in Flushed Away, Astro Boy was designed and animated by Hong Kong animation studio Imagi.
