Involved in as many events as they are, the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation is constantly on the lookout for more talent and help. One of their latest projects is to establish a jazz orchestra. Intended to give secondary school youngsters a taste of performing the big band bop and swing from the era of Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Glenn Miller, the group is the brainchild of musician Brian Hawkins. He will be holding auditions on Saturday, October 31, at the Island School's music studio (20 Borrett Road). Emphasis will be on group playing. Prospective young band members will be asked to perform two minutes of a piece of music of their choice and do a sight reading test. Except for drummers and pianists, you should bring your own instrument. Inquiries should be directed to 5175 2476. The foundation is also recruiting volunteers to manage the art stalls and crowds at its annual Arts in the Park Mardi Gras on November 14 and 15. The carnival will be at Victoria Park. Volunteers are needed from 10am to 5pm on either or both days for all kinds of duty. Contact email@example.com or 9308 3800 for a volunteer form before October 25.
