The operator of a now-defunct primary school has donated its surplus funds to a university's scholarship to support students of education.
In a ceremony on Tuesday, managers of Hoi Bun School in Lei Yue Mun presented a HK$550,000 cheque to Baptist University.
Established in 1946, the primary school educated children from Lei Yue Mun Village for 62 years. It closed last year after it failed to admit enough new pupils.
The school had more than HK$440,000 left in its reserves when it closed. Managers decided to set up a scholarship at Baptist University's department of education studies to financially support young people hoping to become teachers.
A further HK$110,000 was donated by the primary school's alumni.
The scholarship will sponsor both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
