Suspended death sentence for professor's murderer
A 23-year-old college student who fatally slit his professor's throat in full view of students during an evening class was given a death sentence suspended for two years by a Beijing court.
The No1 Intermediate People's Court ruled that Fu Chengli, a final-year student at the China University of Political Science and Law, had intended to murder law professor Cheng Chunming, but because he surrendered to police immediately after committing the crime, the sentence should be suspended.
Fu remained calm during the 30-minute hearing and asked the judge why the verdict included only his lawyer's statement in his defence but not his own, the Guangzhou Daily reported yesterday.
Fu stabbed the associate professor of comparative jurisprudence last October after discovering that his girlfriend, a graduate student at the university, was having an affair with Cheng.
The murder was the third attack on an educator in the space of a month and drew the attention of Communist Party leaders in charge of propaganda, Li Changchun and Liu Yunshan .
They issued calls for better moral education.
