ENGLAND soccer star Paul Gascoigne broke two bones in his right leg during training yesterday and may need surgery, his Italian club Lazio said.
A spokesman said the 26-year-old player, one of the world's most talented midfielders, was taken to Rome's San Giacomo hospital by ambulance from the First Division side's training ground near the Italian capital's Olympic Stadium.
He was having X-rays. ''He may need to be operated on to insert a pin,'' the spokesman said, adding that the tibia and fibula bones had both been fractured.
Lazio teammate Claudio Sclosa told reporters at the hospital that Gascoigne had broken the leg when he and another player both went for the ball during practice.
Injury to the same limb delayed Gascoigne's move to Lazio in a US$10 million transfer deal with English club Tottenham Hotspur when he tore knee ligaments in a lunging tackle during the showpiece English FA Cup Final in May 1991.
He eventually moved to Italy in the summer of 1992 but his stay in Rome has also been troubled by injury worries. He has been in and out of the Lazio team with a variety of complaints and has also struggled to control his weight.
