What is it? Mai Samui, on Thailand's Koh Samui, is the latest sibling in the Mai resort family. The two-storey accommodation is split into two parts: a family-friendly area at the rear, with its own amenities, including a swimming pool, and, on the other side, beach-view rooms that cater to couples. Another, larger pool flows through and around the accommodation wings.
What are the rooms like? The decor is clean, simple and colourful. Family rooms have a large balcony and views across northern Samui, while the rest enjoy direct pool access and hydro-lounges. Each room features bright fabric and glossy timber but the highlight is the massive bathtub, which is accessed by stairs and takes an hour to fill.
So water is the central theme? Water is a theme without it being too Zen; premium villas feature infinity pools and, of course, the beach is just metres away.
What about dining? There are two restaurants - a fine-dining option that has innovative Thai twists and an all-day eatery. There's also a barbecue shack and beach bar. The resort is hosting beach parties for Hong Kong groups next month with DJs, bonfires and candle lanterns.
