BLUE, one of the most popular colours, not only matches his appearance but also his personality. The ''blue boy'' is newcomer Ricky Fan Chun-fung.

  In the coming months, blue will be the main colour of Fan's wardrobe, to convey to fans the two sides of the singer - the melancholy side and also the lively and healthy side.

  ''As suggested by Tina Liu Tin-lan, my image designer, blue suits me well, and I feel the same way,'' he said. ''In my debut album with BMG, the emphasis is on blue. I will appear as a 'blue boy'.''   Fan's singing potential was discovered by BMG when he attended an audition around Chinese New Year.

  ''When I stepped into the studio, I was nervous but also very happy. It was an unforgettable experience.''   After the audition, he was asked to sign a contract with BMG.

  Fan started playing the electric organ at 15, and developed a love for singing a year later when his father's friend introduced him to celebrity Tai See-chung to learn singing.

  Two years later, he switched from the organ to the piano, and he has been taking dance lessons since last year.

  After his Form Four at the Kennedy Town Government Secondary School, Fan attended the Delia School of Canada as he wanted to further his studies in the United States.

  However, after he graduated, he decided to postpone his education and follow a singing career.

  Fan has all the qualifications of a pop idol - a sweet and handsome face, youthfulness and vitality, and a strong voice.

  ''I know it's not easy to be a pop idol. There is a lot of competition as so many newcomers are trying to climb up the ladder of stardom.''   He believes that hard work will pay off. Right now, he is working on his singing and dancing skills and is open to advice from colleagues.

  As he is very new on the pop scene, he plans to learn different kinds of songs to win over the hearts of pop fans.

  ''I am still figuring out my own style,'' Fan said.

  His debut album, to be released in June, will feature 10 songs, including seven cover versions and three local productions, mostly love songs.

  Fan, who will turn 21 in June, is also trying to write songs.

  ''When I have inspiration, I will sit in front of the piano and start composing. I've already written about 10 songs.''   The young singer also hopes to be a producer some day.
