Yip Kai-ming, 45, has pleaded not guilty to murder, claiming he did not intend to kill the woman and was suffering from psychological problems at the time.

Opening the prosecution before Mr Justice Michael McMahon and a jury at the Court of First Instance yesterday, Francis Lo Hing-cheung said Yip and victim Ng Kwai-fong, 39, had developed an intimate relationship before the killing on September 13 last year at Ng's home in Sun Chui Estate, Sha Tin.

Lo said Yip wanted to plead guilty to manslaughter but the prosecution would not accept that plea.

He said Yip, who had two children with his wife, was a deacon of the Hong Kong Deaf People Christian Church in Kowloon City.

Ng was married to Leung Wai-kong, also deaf, with whom she had two children, the court heard. Leung last saw his wife at Hung Hom MTR station on the day she was killed, when he took their children to visit their grandparents. Ng had told him that she planned to visit an elderly woman in Tai Po.
