The photograph shows an undercover police officer aggressively grabbing a naked prostitute by the hair while a client kneels on the floor with his back to the camera following a raid on a bathhouse in Zhengzhou , Henan .
The picture of the young woman, whose anguished face and private parts are barely pixilated, has provoked intense criticism from mainland commentators and internet users for grossly infringing her privacy.
With the prostitute's face easily identifiable, the undercover officer with cropped hair was also shown in TV footage questioning  the woman over how many clients she had that night. 
More than 300 police officers took part in the operation which snared nine suspects, media reports said.  
The  photo, among a set of pictures released by Zhengzhou police to showcase the anti-vice drive  last Wednesday, quickly made its way onto the internet and triggered heated discussion among popular internet communities. While some expressed their disapproval of prostitution, which is illegal on the mainland, many criticised the police for encroaching  on the woman's privacy, and the officer's rough treatment.
One commentator said: 'It's a blatant violation of human rights, and the police should apologise and pay compensation.'  
Angry internet users called for the launch of a human flesh search - a collaborative online investigation - to expose the identity of the undercover police officer. 
Wuyue Sanren, a social columnist, said publication of the photo had not just shamed the woman, but the whole community because it gave  the impression that people on the mainland disregarded basic human rights.
Professor Liu Renwen, from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences'  Institute of Law,  said there was a general lack of privacy protection on the mainland, 'not to mention 'bad people' such as prostitutes who are disregarded in terms of moral judgment'. 
He said police were sometimes preoccupied by the need to tackle crime in the name of the public interest, but their actions could come at the expense of individual liberties because of legal ambiguity. 
'A line has to be drawn between the public interest and the need to protect privacy,' Liu said. 
'A poster showing a wanted criminal is in the interests of the public, but the publishing of a photo of a prostitute is definitely not.'
