Stock up on tissues, because the latest high school anime drama Kimi ni Todoke (From Me to You) is a uplifting and heart- warming tale about school life and the bonds of friendships that will melt even the coldest of hearts.
Originally an award-winning manga by Karuho Shiina which was published in anthology magazine Bessatsu Mararet, Kimi ni Todoke has been adapted into an anime by Production I.G.
The ghostly-looking Sawako Kuronuma has always struggled to make friends due to her appearance. When she was younger, a classmate called her Sadako, the name of the creepy girl in horror movie The Ring. This starts a rumour that Sawako has supernatural powers. People said that if you looked into her eyes for more than three seconds, you'd be cursed and a calamity would befall you within seven days.
When she starts high school, Sawako is befriended by Kazehaya, the most popular boy in school. Inspired by his outgoing and kind personality, Sawako tries to make friends. Her efforts start to pay off.
But not everyone likes the fact Sawako is so close to Kazehaya, and her enemies start to spread nasty rumours about her and her friends. Are the friendships strong enough to weather the lies?
It's going to take a while for this anime to make its way to local screens, but you can still check out the manga. Viz Media started publishing the English version in August, and the first two volumes are available in Hong Kong. Volume three is due out on January 5.
