With their rocker appearance, complete with heavy-metal accessories, body piercings and multiple tattoos, Taiwanese alternative rockers Mavis Fan & 100% are far from most people's conception of innocent.

But that is the title of the album the band - comprising Mavis Fan Hsiao-shuan, Allen Chen, MO Chen (no relation) and Robert Jen - are in town to promote. Innocent is the band's second album since forming in 2007.

Fan, 32, the band's lead vocalist, has dealt with the concept of innocence since the age of 14, when she blew audiences away with the love ballads she composed and her talented playing of several musical instruments, as well as her angelic voice and face, which earned her the nickname 'the little wizard of music'.

But in the late 1990s, she struggled to further her career, falling into depression as the limelight dimmed around her. When she returned to the scene, she stunned audiences again - this time with her wild new look, including short hair dyed platinum blonde and body piercings and tattoos.

'We formed this band based on an innocent belief,' she said. 'We want to tell people it's OK not to be your parents' perfect child and it's OK not to follow the norm. Just listen to your heart. If I became the person others wanted me to be, I would be a zombie, and I would rather die than live like that.'

Why is this album called Innocent?
