The boyfriend of a jailed former Hang Seng Bank manager yesterday received the same jail term as she did for laundering more than HK$144.63 million that she had taken from her clients' accounts, including those of several prominent people.

Jason Chan Chun-sing, 32, a former customer manager at BNP Paribas, was put behind bars for six years and eight months after being convicted of money-laundering before Deputy Judge Sham Siu-man.

In sentencing him in the District Court, Sham rejected Chan's mitigation that he committed the offences out of love for his former girlfriend, Cheuk Sau-yee, 31.

'Love won't cause people to commit offences, but in fact it will only pull two people together. You committed the offences out of greed,' he said, adding that the offences Chan committed were very serious and the amount of money laundered was substantial.

Sham gave Chan four months' discount for his contribution in voluntary work, as mentioned in mitigation letters written by school and college classmates and friends.

Members of his family and his superior also wrote mitigation letters and spoke highly of his character.
