Sugita takes gold in men's singles

Japan's Yuichi Sugita took the gold medal in the men's singles, from compatriot Tatsuma Ito 6-3, 6-1 at Victoria Park yesterday. It was the only success for Japan on a day dominated by Taiwanese players, who won gold in the women's singles and women's doubles. Chang Kai-chen overcame China's Zhang Shuai 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 in the singles, while in the doubles Chuang Chia-jung and Hsieh Su-wei, who are ranked nine among the world's women doubles players, combined to defeat South Koreans Kim So-jung and Lee Jin-a in straight sets. China grabbed the men's doubles gold thanks to Zeng Shaoxuan and Zhang Ze, who defeated Taiwanese duo Lee Hsin-han and Yi Chu-huan in straight sets.
