Thrills and spills as HK competitors enjoy a day to remember
Hong Kong athletes had a day to remember as thrills and spills abounded at Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground.
Hong Kong finished on a high with three more bronze medals - all in women's events - and two national records, including the longest-standing mark set in 1982 in finishing fourth in the women's 4x400 metres.
High jumper Yip Hiu-laam took bronze with a leap of 1.60 metres before Leong Yuen-fan finished third in the 5,000m.
But it was the relay events that had the hosts celebrating, winning bronze in the 4x100 in a new national time of 45.71 seconds, breaking the old mark of 45.83 set last May at the Asian Grand Prix at Wan Chai Sports Ground.
Veteran sprinter Wan Kin-yee (pictured), competing in probably her last Games, ran the third leg and Chan Ho-yee sprinted the anchor leg to beat Taiwan for third. China easily won gold in 44.69 seconds ahead of Japan (44.89).
'We had feared Taiwan the most and we were really hoping we would beat them, knowing China and Japan were too strong for us. I am so proud of our team,' Wan, 33, said.
