Squash star Rebecca Chiu Wing-yin will be the biggest winner of the Hang Seng Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme, which will pay a record HK$6,136,000 to medal winners at the East Asian Games.
Chiu, who won three gold medals and one silver medal, will receive the highest individual cash incentive, HK$237,000, after Hong Kong athletes achieved ground-breaking results by winning 110 medals - 26 gold, 31 silver and 53 bronze.
Dr Eric Li, chairman of the Hong Kong Sports Institute, congratulated all the medallists and said their brilliant performances at the East Asian Games was the beginning of a new chapter in local sports history.
'Hong Kong athletes have ably demonstrated their strengths and perseverance,' he said.
The Games payout is the largest cash award received by athletes in the dollar-for-dollar incentive scheme by the sports institute and the bank. It will boost the total amount given to athletes under the scheme to more than HK$15 million. About 200 medallists will receive their cash awards at a ceremony next month.
