ALTHOUGH flight testing of the Boeing B777 will not begin until June, Boeing pilots, flight test engineers and systems designers have already ''flown'' hundreds of flights in a new laboratory integrating all the new aircraft's electronic systems.
Captain John Cashman (centre), chief pilot on the B777 programme, goes through the steps of a simulated ''take-off '' in the aircraft company's Systems Integration Laboratory, known to staff as ''Airplane Zero'' or the ''Skinless 777''.
Captain Cashman and 33 other Boeing pilots have been performing round the clock flight testing since December to observe the behaviour of the B777's systems, to detect possible problems early and to be able to put them right before the first flight.
This, they hope, will enable quicker than usual flight worthiness certification from the Federal Aviation Administration.
