A business group is urging the government to approve the expansion of the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai as soon as possible. The Hong Kong Business Community Joint Conference, which represents 43 business organisations covering more than 10,000 enterprises, says the expansion is urgently needed to meet demand. 'There are as many as 3,000 enterprises on the waiting list for some fairs and the venue has to be big enough to fit in more exhibitors,' said Chan Kei-biu, chairman of the Electronic Industries Association, a member of the joint conference. 'If we keep them queuing every year, they will not consider coming again. The loss will be huge if we don't keep expanding.' Chan's comments follow a Chinese University report that put the city's average usage of exhibition space for the whole year at 50 per cent, suggesting that expansion is not urgent. But the group said the Wan Chai facilities were always busy, and it was not practical to split trade fairs between different venues.
