The protesting Africans, who Wayne saw, had taken to the corridors of the Bella Centre. It was a demonstration against a leaked Danish government document. The document was a draft of the final agreement and it gave the nod to a rise in temperature of two degrees Celsius.

The Pan-African delegation says it can only afford a one-degree rise.

The protest followed a speech by Lumumba Di-Aping, the chief negotiator of the G77 bloc of nations at an ad hoc meeting of African representatives. The G77 is made up of mostly poor nations.

Before he delivered his speech, Di-Aping put his head in his hands and said: 'We have been asked to sign a suicide pact'. Then, he wept.

Afterwards, he said two degrees for the rest of the world meant up to 3.5 degrees for Africa.

'I would rather die with dignity than sign a deal that will channel my people into a furnace,' he told the crowd, who then began the protest.
