A lone robber who went into a bank in Kwai Chung with an air gun and two knives made off with HK$66,000 only to be caught by police as he tried to escape by boarding a bus. The 48-year-old, surnamed Au, went into the Standard Chartered Bank branch in Kung Yip Street shortly before 10am. 'He took out a gun and two knives, and went close to three service counters, telling staff to give him money,' Ng Kwok-keung, Kwai Tsing's district chief inspector, said. 'The staff did what he said, and they only pressed the alarm button as he fled,' Ng said, adding that there were only two or three customers in the bank. The man ran towards Kwai Chung Road after leaving the bank. Patrolling police officers chased him when they heard the alarm. The thief tried to board a bus, but the door was closed. Officers pounced on him and he surrendered. He was being detained for questioning last night. No charge had been laid and the investigation is continuing.
