Tug of war over diamond rings heats up in celebrity divorce
The divorce between Michael Hotung and former TVB actress Katie Chan Fok-sang is turning into a public stand-off, and at the centre of the dispute are three diamond rings that he wants her to return.
Yesterday Hotung's mother, Winnie Ho Yuen-ki, backed her son in a statement, denying she had given the three diamond rings - worth more than HK$30 million - as presents for her daughters and daughter-in-law.
Ho, Stanley Ho Hung-sun's estranged sister, said she decided in October to give the rings to a trust fund set up by her.
'Katie should not have refused to hand over the three rings,' she said. 'She twisted the facts and tried to win the public's sympathy by confusing the facts with her divorce with Michael.'
Chan, 49, held a press conference last Monday to announce her divorce from Hotung over his 'unreasonable behaviour', on which she did not elaborate. The couple have been married for about 20 years.
She said he had filed a lawsuit against her demanding the return of three rings, which she said were Ho's gift to her daughters and daughter-in-law.
Chan, who for 10 years acted as an adviser and spokeswoman for her mother-in-law, described how she had been kept away from Ho since October.
