Keep Breathing (CD) Kary Ng

Rebecca Tsui

Kary Ng's first EP Keep Breathing is full of soft melodies, with none of the more up-tempo numbers of her past albums.

Opener Here We Are offers no surprises compared to Ng's past love songs. But there's no denying that her beautiful voice does justice to the song. Another highlight is the title track, which Ng composed herself. The melody is impressive for an amateur composer, and it hints at the fact Ng has more songs up her sleeve.

Ng is best known for singing rock and pop, but on this EP, she adapts her voice to the ballad format. In short, she has matured and is no longer the person who first made a name for herself as a member of girl band Cookies. She has learned how to convey emotion through her voice and touch listeners with her attentiveness to both the lyrics and melodies of the songs she handles.

Ng has said that she wanted to encourage people facing difficult times with this EP, and to an extent that works. This is a quietly uplifting small collection of tracks. But, as an EP, it can become repetitive after multiple listenings.

The pity is that this is not a full album. Ng offers us a sample of the singer that she is yet to be, and after listening, you want more. For that, no doubt, we will have to wait.
