Pseudo-model Monique Chau Hoi-ying  has been given  12 months' probation and fined  HK$500  after ketamine was found in her possession in a school toilet. 
Outside Eastern Court, the 17-year-old lang mo apologised to the public and said she would leave the model industry for a while before deciding whether to resume her career.
The Form Five student was originally due for sentencing on December 8, but the magistrate postponed sentencing to yesterday after a urine test showed she had taken the drug before she first appeared in court, on November 17. 
Chau had pleaded guilty to possessing 0.06 grams of ketamine in a toilet at the school she was attending at the time in North Point.
Adopting the probation officer's report, Acting Principal Magistrate Bina Chainrai  sentenced Chau to probation and to pay HK$500 in court costs. 
She also ordered Chau to stay away from drugs and to provide urine samples whenever required. 
Chau must consult a probation officer about her work and residence arrangements, take part in group activities for drug users and receive residential treatment for drug addiction when necessary. 
Her family was not in court yesterday.
Chau first worked as a model in 2008, and took part in the Asia Game Show  the same year. 
Together with three other lang mo, she  published the photograph album Summer Blooming  at both the Book Fair  and the Ani-Com and Games Fair  last year. She gained media exposure after a  bra insert dropped from her bikini at a promotional event last year.
At a press conference yesterday, Chau bowed six times to convey her apology to the public and asked for a second chance. 
'After the incident, I was confused and worried. I didn't know what to do,' she said. 'After reflection, I realise that [taking drugs] is harmful to my health and it also casts a shadow on my future. 
'As a public figure, at this point, I understand that my behaviour will greatly affect the public. I hope this incident can be a warning to young people.'
Her friend Karl Hui said a number of organisations had asked Chau to become an anti-drug ambassador, but that she wanted to take a break for about two months before taking on the work. 
The student said that she would concentrate on her studies for the time being and aimed to complete the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination.   
Edmond Cheung, Chau's former manager at HK Model House,  said her contract with the company ended in May last year and that she had been working freelance for the company.
Cheung said the company would put Chau on hold this year, but would consider giving her work if she behaved well on probation.
Court documents showed that an administrator spotted Chau acting furtively in the toilet on September 8 last year. When confronted, she surrendered some ketamine wrapped in a piece of paper,  a pack of tissues and a straw. The school reported the case to police, and a urine test returned positive results.
