To celebrate the inaugural Hong Kong Baby Products Fair, the Hong Kong Trade and Development Council (HKTDC) organised the First Babywear Design Competition, showcasing up-and-coming local babywear designers.

A HKTDC spokesman says that the competition aims to 'promote Hong Kong-designed babywear to international markets and to nurture talent in the babywear industry'.

There were two categories, the Open group for local professional designers or any interested Hong Kong residents and the Student group for full-time students.

Contestants had to design apparel for babies, aged six to 24 months, that reflected the theme 'The Blessings of Life'. The winning pieces were on display yesterday at the Yellow Bus Catwalkbaby Competition at the Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Cheung Ching-man's 'Baby Tiger' design was the winner in the Open category, while Hong Kong Design Institute student Sigrid Chan's 'Love & Protect' series triumphed in the Student section.

Cheung says her collection was inspired by Chinese symbolism. 'The tiger represents strength, energy and life,' she says. 'For parents, the greatest blessing is that their baby can grow up as healthy and as strong as a tiger, and with a good future. Because of this, I would like a fusion of the traditional culture and modern babywear, with tiger elements in the design, like the tiger head-shaped hat, glove-like pockets, embroidered shoes and the jacket with 'Super strong' slogan.'
