Tse Wing-king, 21, a scaffolding worker, was convicted of careless driving in the District Court yesterday after pleading guilty.

The motorcyclist later died and Tse was initially charged with dangerous driving causing death. But after the judge considered the details of the case, she found that there was no case for Tse to answer.

Tse chased the victim, Wong Sing-chi, and three friends, who were on motorcycles, on Bride's Pool Road in Tai Mei Tuk around midnight on August 17, 2008, the court heard. The four tried to evade Tse, but he followed them.

Wong's friends later gave way to Tse who chased the victim. Wong lost control of his motorcycle on a bend and careered into the opposite lane.

The bike hit a tree, bounced back into the lane and Wong was thrown into middle of the road. Tse avoided the bike, but he did not see Wong who got caught under his car and dragged him for 55 metres before stopping.
