Entertainment veteran Liza Wang Ming-chun is determined to make sure at least some of our collective heritage doesn't become a distant collective memory. She is staging a new Cantonese opera show, De Ling and Empress Dowager Ci Xi, at the Cultural Centre. Instead of merely holding a dress rehearsal on Tuesday afternoon, she invited a group of students and teachers to see it for free. By all accounts, the introduction impressed quite a few. 'When the audience shows you how much they enjoyed your performance, it just makes you feel that all the hard work and struggle was worth it,' Wang said, adding that one teacher told her she cried three times during the show. Co-starring with Wang is her husband and long-time collaborator Law Kar-ying (above), who also mingled with the audience. 'Some of them told me that it was the first time in their life they had seen a full Cantonese opera performance and they really liked it. I was very impressed,' Law said. 'Liza felt that since we were doing the dress rehearsal at the actual theatre anyway, it would be a waste to perform in front of empty seats, so why not bring in some young people to watch the rehearsal. So we contacted the Education and Manpower Bureau.' You can experience the Cantonese opera for yourself as the show, which opened on Wednesday, runs until Sunday. For information, call 2388 3850.
