In 'Thief caught in a mall', Wesley has come up with a clever way for Kitty to help the old man and catch the thief.

We're always impressed when a character thinks of a smart solution to a problem. But if we also care about the character, or we sympathise with them, then we'll not only be impressed, we'll be cheering them on as well.

In Wesley's story, Kitty is out shopping, sees a crime being committed and thinks of a way of locating the thief among the crowds of shoppers.

But we might be more moved by Kitty's triumph, if this Saturday wasn't just an ordinary day for her. What if she has problems of her own as she enters the shopping centre?

And what if these problems get worse before her smart idea makes her the heroine?

In other words, if we knew more about Kitty, and maybe the problems she has, then her actions may well have even more meaning and impress the readers more.
