Last week 34.6 per cent of 775 respondents said they were dissatisfied, compared with 30.1 per cent in December. Only 17.7 per cent were satisfied, while 47.2 per cent said its performance was 'so-so'.

The survey was carried out by the university's Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies a few days after Legco passed funding for the HK$66.9 billion high-speed railway to Guangzhou.

A total of 25.4 per cent said they did not trust the government, compared with 19.6 per cent in an earlier poll in November. Another 28.9 per cent trusted the government, compared with 30 per cent in November.

Dr Ma Ngok, a political scientist at the university, believed the rise in the number of people dissatisfied with the government's performance was related to the row over the funding application.

The survey also found that 34.3 per cent trusted the central government, down 1.6 percentage points from November. Another 22.7 per cent did not trust the central government, up 5.9 percentage points.
