As members of Belgian band Soulwax, brothers Stephen and David Dewaele (right) are known for creating a gorgeous hybrid of alternative rock and electro that has taken them to some of the biggest stages around the world.

But as their alter-ego 2 Many DJs - a leading light in the so-called bastard pop genre - the Dewaele brothers are known for creating a hybrid of, well, pretty much everything, merging seemingly disparate tracks such as Missy Elliott's Get Ur Freak On over AC/DC's Back in Black.

The sound is also known as a mash-up, and 2 Many DJs have taken it to the next level by creating on-the-fly journeys through popular music that can see more than 150 tracks - or at least snippets of them - dropped in live sets that can last just an hour.

They recently told Time Out: 'It's f*****-up pop music. It's definitely not all-girl pop or something, but we don't think too much about it. As DJs we definitely try and play what people want, to give them a great party within the parameters of what we like. We like a lot of music.'

The Dewaeles display a deeper knowledge of music than 99 per cent of the DJs out there, and in the process have created a new style of DJing that's greatly influenced by old-school hip hop turntablists such as Kool Herc - but also one that firmly belongs on this side of the millennium.
